PITTSBURGH, PA

CONCEPT

Amalfi represents a simpler and more carefree time in the homeowner’s life. Her memories of Italy are dominated with crisp whites paired with wet sand and a cool breeze. This overall feeling of freedom and relaxation is the concept for the central hub of the this home where the homeowner can entertain, share, and create memories with friends and family.

GOAL

The goal of this remodel was to combine the dining and kitchen area while utilizing as much natural light as possible. Some requests of the homeowner was to incorporate the exposed brick into the project, keep the space feeling as large as possible, and make sure that circulation was not hindered in and out of the kitchen. The home is an early 20th century craftsman and the homeowner would like to see the aesthetic of the design fit naturally with the remainder of the home.

INSPIRATION

The homeowner has overcome so many obstacles in her life and is a living reminder of how beautiful and precious life can be. One of her favorite places is the Amalfi Coast so inspiration for this design is the photo to the right. This kitchen and dining room   is the central hub of the home and will be where plenty of entertainment and gatherings will happen. The color and joy is found  in the people who occupy the space, while the space acts as a clean and comfortable canvas for friendships and love to shine and grow.

COLOR STUDY

I utilized Adobe Color by uploading the inspiration photo and drawing colors directly from it. From that, I found the muted, tonal hues of sandy browns and whites. The quartz used for the countertops resembles patterns of wet sand and foam on the shore and black accents scatter the space to help ground and otherwise very light and airy space.

DESIGN LAYOUT

The homeowner wanted a new layout by opening up the wall between the existing kitchen and dining area and combining the two spaces. It was important to bring in as much light as possible so a new, large window was included above the new location of the sink. Built-in storage and eating nook was created to make the space feel more intentional and to fit with the craftsman style of the home.
